Will I or my child get hurt?

The philosophy that underpins Karate is that of self-defence. You will be training in a structured class with students of a similar level of experience under the watchful eye of a qualified Karate instructor. However, Karate is a martial art and a light-contact sport, and therefore, by its very nature, there is always a risk of injury. As a beginner, you will not be involved in any sparring or throwing.

Does Karate promote aggressive behaviour?

Far from promoting violent behaviour – something parents are sometimes concerned about – Karate classes teach self-discipline and patience as well as the confidence that comes with personal achievement. A child who displays confidence at school or on the playground is less likely to be picked on or bullied by others. Karate can actually reduce incidences of violence.

What do I call the instructor?

In the dojo, the instructor is referred to as “sensei.”

What are the 5 Maxims of Karate?

Students are encouraged to observe the five Maxims of Karate in their training:

  • Seek perfection of character

  • Be faithful

  • Endeavor to excel

  • Respect others

  • Refrain from violent behaviour.
